Dilemma

I am in a decorating dilemma and it is a dilemma that I created myself. My kitchen, dining room, and living room were decorated in country and primitives with an Americana theme. I decided that I was tired of the country and primitives and wanted to do something different. The result. I have no particular style. I have bought Victorian, art deco, an antique side board, and an assortment of odds and ends from flea markets. I am now working on my living room which opens to the dining room. I'll post pictures if I ever get it together. I gave most of my Americana to my daughters. I do have a few pieces left. I think I'll store this basket and the two pictures. Of course, I'm keeping my living room and dining room furniture. I'm just changing accessories.
This Americana Basket
These two pictures are grouped together and I'm replacing them with a collection of assorted plates.

I like this rooster so much that I'm keeping it. The rooster matches nothing.
I am replacing the braided area rug in the living room with this rug - but I still have a round braided rug under the table in the dining room.
I replaced the Americana pictures on each side of the fireplace with a set of framed pictures.
I'm keeping this antique chair. The caning is really nice.
I have this chest and a smaller chest that I'm keeping. I store candles and tarts in them.

I bought this new painting. There is a glare on it in the picture. I am going to put it on the dining room wall. I took down a large mirror.
Have any of you ever done anything as bizarre as this? I hope that I can get it all together! I know that a country rooster doesn't look good beside a Victorian floral arrangement!

There's no rule on decorating. Just go for it. :) My house is pretty much a mish mash of designs. I have lots of fantasy themes, plus antique pieces from family members.

I love your little chest. That would be my showpiece for sure!

You could spray paint some of your stuff and keep it for your new look. I have a bunch of stuff I need to paint. I just need the get up and go to go with it! hahaha

Keep us informed on how the new look is coming along.

Hi Sweetie...Somehow I imagine there is so much love and warmth radiating from your home, I'll bet burlap & satin would look great together there. It does make us smile to have a change, doesn't it?

Ohhhhhh yes, I know this feeling. The fact is, I am going to do what you just took down. I want to do my kitchen Americana. Haha. I am cross stitching an angel to be part of it, I bought one sign so far. I buy the baskets for my Grandaughter Kristen all the time. She has Americana everywhere. Did you ever visit her blog, she is Christian Crafter.
She was my Fawn's daughter. Keep going, and I just know you will pull it all together.

I have one decorating rule in my house. If I like it I use it! I have more country/primative in my kitchen and bathroom, "Gramma's house" in my living and dining rooms. My entry changes with the seasons. If you like the rooster with the victorian floral, then do it! That's what makes it your house and gives your home character. Don't worry about rules jusat do what makes you happy! Jean

I love the chest.

Hi Sweetie! I don't think it is as mismatched as you think. I love the Old World look of the carpet with the chair and chest. I think that matches wonderfully. What about placing the rooster somewhere where you can also place it right up to a floral arrangment or greenery to soften the country look of it. I thought of the Blue Willow pattern as soon as I saw your carpet. That is what it reminds me of. I think if you love something, you find a way to make it work and it looks great. I look forward to seeing more photos of the rooms as they come together.

Hugs ~

Well, as you know, I have a new place. I want to do something different. I always want to change things when I move. Red is my favortie color and I have lots of red assesories. Three walls in the new house are red. I think I'll have to change my assesory color. I have some gold things. My friend Patty gave me two prints with gold frames, green mats, vases of flowers with some red. I've not decided where i'll use them.
I saw today that Kirkland's is having a Fall sale. Do you have those stores where you are? They have lots of pictures that I like and I also saw one at Lifeway. Right now in the Memphis house, I have many of Honey Bear's paintings on the walls. I know I will keep the one of Cardinals in a snow scene that he did for me when we lived in Pennsylvania. I think it will be fine with the red walls. I do want to have it matted and framed. I can't decide if I want it over the mantle where it has always hung or if I want a mirror there.
I did away with our headboard. I am contemplating whether to make a padded headboard or buy a metal bed.
I wish I had some help with this. Seems we are both in the same spot.

The only thing I can say is. "if your love it- use it". We need to
surround ourselves with things that touch our heart!!

Oh, sweet Sweetie, I am pretty sure we have ALL done this. Ya just get tired of the same things. I, too, had Americana a few years ago.
The wonderful thing about decorating is that anything goes! Whatever I love, I put it in my house. A rooster goes with EVERYTHING so keep him close. If you love something, that is what you should use. Or at least this is what I do. I like surrounding myself with things that have meaning and could care less if it really "goes". and, I LOVE A LOT OF STUFF !! lol The more I can get, the better I like it.
I couldn't tell you what STYLE my house is...a little country, a little French country, a whole lot THRIFT STORE treasures that I dearly love.
Have fun with it and keep us posted..can't wait to see what all you do....
love, bj

Thanks for stopping by today..
oh, yes...I can remember doing exactly the very same thing as you...get my allowance and off to the record store I went for 45's. I still have a lot of them but my oldest grandson is soooo into the 50's and 60's..he and I went thrifting one day last year and found an old record player that played 45's and 78's. Had to buy a new needle but the old player works great. Needless to say, he got all my old records...which I was more than happy to give them to him.
We had a main street right downtown and we would "drag" it every weekend night...and of course, the drive-inn where we always went so that EVERYONE would be sure to see us.
Oh, and the drive-in movies...those are a bittersweet memory for me. We only went in the summertime, it didn't get dark until 9 or so...I HAD to be in my living room by 10:30 on weekends so I never got to finish a movie. :O(
No big deal now to me but it sure was back then. Mom told me after I was grown that she was sorry for making me come in so early but...peer pressure back then was fierce. I told her, of course, it didn't hurt me any to be home at a decent time.
Gosh, my memory buds are flowing now...better get busy and do the laundry, cooking, cleaning, groc. shopping...OH, DEAR..I can tell I spend waaay too much time on this WONDERFUL computer!!!!!!

Hi Sweetie, and thanks for commenting on my blog. I hope you found some recipes you like on my recipe blog as well. :o)

I'm the last person to ask about decorating. My taste is eclectic to put it mildly.

I enjoyed my visit here. Hope you have a blessed weekend!
