Quilting Saturday

This past Saturday some of my daughters and granddaughters got together at my house to work on family quilts. Stephanie has been making quilts for several years. Her enthusiasm must be contagious as the girls had a great time. They cut blocks from clothes of living and deceased family members.
Of course, Michele had to "cut up" a little bit.
This is Stephanie being serious. Stephanie, who seldom irons, said that it was necessary to put up the ironing board to iron the fabric.
Stephanie cut blocks of fabric with such precision that I was impressed.

This is Michele and Stephanie hard at work with Payton in the background. Sheila was at the quilting party also but, somehow, I missed taking a picture of her.

Mallory thought that it was really neat to cut out squares. She is anxious to begin sewing.

Since I began blogging, I take pictures all of the time. Kristen, a sophomore in college, tries to hide her face every time she sees me with a camera. Kristen is taking an elective course in fabrics.
Her assignment was to make a landscape out of fabric. Kristen really worked hard on this project.

This picture is really blurred but I wanted everyone to see Michele's first quilt. It was made using Sherry's clothes. Stephanie bought photo fabric so that Michele could place a picture of Sherry in the center of the quilt. On Saturday Brooke, Sherry's youngest daughter, stopped to see her aunts and cousins. She fell in love with the quilt made from Sherry's clothing. Michele gave Brooke the quilt. Actually Michele had planned to make a quilt for Brooke but Brooke liked this one so much that Michele gave it to her.
This is a rag quilt that Stephanie had made for Johnny. The fabric has a hunting theme with pictures of deer and bears.
This is a hap that Stephanie made. I have it on the daybed in the spare room.
The girls still have another cutting session before they actually begin to put the quilts together. On Monday I went with Sheila to JoAnn Fabrics and another fabric store to pick up quilting supplies. I am amazed at the popularity of quilting. Amber and Jennifer will join Michele, Sheila, and Stephanie at the next session.

I love hand-made quilts -especially when they are made from old clothing. My Grandma made quilts every winter, all by using fabric from family member's clothing and it was always fun to look at the pieces and remember what piece of clothing this or that piece had once been. Beautiful work in the quilts shown here!

What a wonderful day.
Quilting is such fun. I made a couple of small lap robe size quilts a few years ago. I enjoy the hand quilting.
Blessings.

How fun to have your girls all over for a quilting session. My mom made the most lovely quilts and I so wish I had taken more time to learn to do it, too. I have never liked sewing, tho. I've made a few quilts but very, very simple designs...mostly 9 patch.
Have fun with it all....
hugs, bj

What a fun day!!! I think it would be great to quilt together with family. I know I love having my quilt ladies here once a month for my quilt group and, thankfully, they have become like a family to me. I love that you are using family clothes so that you will always have the quilt to remember them by. It looks like Stephanie really has everyone inspired. Her quilts are lovely.

Hugs ~

I am so glad they gave the first one to Sherry's daughter and with her picture on it too. Every quilt you show is nice. Heidi would love spending a quilt day with them. We have tons of snow with all schools closed today.

Beautiful post this morning Sweetie... I love the quilting party... It is such a nice way to be together and make something special... And your daughter making that wonderful quilt from Sherry's clothes and then giving it to her daughter... Very touching. I started quilting several years ago but haven't done any lately... I don't know how to sew on a machine so all of mine are hand stitched... LOL LOL Have a good day...

What a wonderful day spent with the girls making quilts! When my girls were young we would sit and cut out blocks and sew. Then one day would have several quilts. That was some great times.

You really know how to make a memory, girl! I think that quilting as a family is just the best idea I have heard yet. I only have one daughter and she lives on the west coast. She has been talking to me about quilts. I think she is getting the "bug."

Quilting has made a comeback. I am happy about this. Some of the quilting being done requires lots of money. That wasn't the way it was done in our grandmother's day. They used scraps from clothes they had made or from old clothes. I'm pleased to read here that your family is using some of the older methods. I see she has tied some of her quilts. I tied the first one I made. It was a lap quilt for my first grandson. I gave it to him when he was 2 years old. When I made the next two grandchildren's quilts, I made them twin size so they could put them on their beds and I hand quilted them. I made the princess a quilt like these. One of my grandson's hasn't been given a quilt yet. All of these were made using the rail pattern.
I like that the girls are getting together to do this project and I love the special quilt made for Sherry's daughter.
Does all of your family live nearby?

Beautiful quilts. Make me wish I had learned that art. Now I think I'm too old to learn it.

Hi again Sweetie! I say if you like your kitchen then leave it just the way it is!!! I think there is no such thing as old fashioned if you really like something. I remember my aunt's kitchen which she changed and I loved the old one. It is such a shame because she and that kitchen were one from way back in my memories as a tiny girl.

It's much more fun to do projects with others. It looks like you guys had a great afternoon. I think that was a great gesture to make the quilt from Sherry's clothes (and her picture) and then in turn give it to Brooke. How special. ~ Robyn

HELLO SWEETIE,
WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY WITH THE GIRLS. I CAN SEE ALL THE LOVE AND WARMTH AND HOW AS A MOTHER IT MUST BE SO REWARDING TO SET BACK AND LOOK AT EACH OF THEIR TALENTS AND PERSONALITIES AND THE UNIQUENESS OF EACH DAUGHTER.
WHAT A WONDERFUL THING YOU ARE TEACHING THEM. I WISH I HAD BEEN TAUGHT TO QUILT BUT MY MOTHER GAVE US OTHER ENDURING TALENTS AND FOR THAT I AM BLESSED.
BLESSINGS
