Celebrate Presidents' Day by flying the Red, White, and Blue
Washington's Birthday is a federal holiday held on the third Monday of February. It originally honored the life and work of George Washington, the first president of the United States. Now, other presidents are also honored on this day, which is why it is often known as Presidents' Day.
The first flag had 13 stars
Although legend has it that Betsy Ross sewed the first flag from a design by George Washington, this has not been substantiated. The first documented U.S. flag was a the staggered star pattern. A strong case for the designer of the first flag is Francis Hopkinson. A delegate from New Jersey to the Continental Congress and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He submitted a bill to Congress for "currency designs, design for the great seal of the U.S., a treasury seal, a design for the flag ..."
Today's flag has 50 stars - one star for each state in the union.
Red, White and Blue "The flag is the emblem of our unity, our power, our thought and purpose as a nation. It has no other character than that which we give it from generation to generation. For most Americans, their sentiments about the flag are not something they can easily define. To most of us, they are as individual as personality, as private as a family matter and almost as personal as religion." -- President Woodrow Wilson, 1917

I love our flag and all that it stands for and that song is just the best. I have it as a ringer on my cell phone. I bought the video of Lee Greenwood singing it when it first came out. Great entry. Have a good day today.
Love Nancy
Sweetie, your celebration post for President's Day is awesome. I too love America and I am very proud that I am an American. But I confess, I forgot it was President's Day today. Shame on me. I am in a cocoon since surgery. Under the covers waiting until I feel human again. I am getting closer. One more week before I can do anything except therapy at home. All is better but healing takes time. I guess we could say that about life too.
Thank you for sharing this lovely post with us today.
Hugs...Jeanne

This was a great post! I always complain that our two February Presidents get short shrift...it annoys me no end...why do they have to share one day? Thanks for the history lesson...I'm sending this to Arianna to read...it's very effective!

What a perfect post for today!!! I love learning about the American Flag. It seems that every year when I teach my class about the flag on Flag Day there is something else to discover.

Thank you so much for the flag lesson! I think I learned a lot of that in grammar school, but it's been a long time. Really enjoyed your post.

Hi, Sweetie, thanks so much for stopping by my post today. I am sure there's some folks out there that agree with Ashley Judd and I may be open for some harsh comment or two but, it is how I feel. I have only received a couple of negative comments in the almost 3 years of blogging...all when I posted something such as todays post. that's ok...I know we all have different views of things..
There's just some things I feel very strongly about and abortion heads the list !!
hugs, bj
What a nice post and lovely pictures as a tribute to President's Day. Hope your day was nice.
